Description
This form (sitra) is a container to contain liquids. Although its generic name may suggest that it was a container for oil, surely it was used for any type of drink. It is a jug used for table service that began to be manufactured from the 9th century AD in the Rhine area. Its fabric was fired in an oxidising atmosphere, which gives it an orange-brown colour, and the surface was smoothed with a spatula to help reduce its porosity. It has a pouring spout that does not interrupt the form of the mouth. The shape of the jug is globular with a mouth diameter of 20 cm. It has lost the handle.
