Description
Altar with inscription dedicated to the numen of the Augustuses. From the theatre of Tarraco, where it was probably placed in the orchestra. It would have been used in the ritual ceremonies held prior to the theatrical performances. In addition to the inscription on the front, “NUMINI / AUGUST(orum)”, referring to the "numen" (divine power) of the Augustuses, the other faces depict a "lituus", an "urceus" and a "patera", all elements used in ritual ceremonies.
