Lead-coated leather shoe sole. The lead covered the iron nails securing the sole of the shoe, to prevent it from being struck by other iron elements, which could generate a spark that would ignite the gunpowder carried by the ship.
This shoe was worn by the person who was to enter the powder room to prevent a fire or explosion on board.
